"I'm privileged to be a part of this growth and change at Trine, I look forward to carrying Trine's tradition of excellence and innovation into the School of Health Sciences, and to ensuring the success of this new doctoral program."

Dr. Max Baumgartner, Dean of School of Health Sciences

Transforming Potential. It's a Trine thing.

The Program

The Doctor of Physical Therapy program is the very first doctoral program to be offered at Trine University.  After much research, planning and determination, the program began enrolling students in the fall semester of 2014.  The program consists of lectures, labs, and clinical education with an emphasis on real patient care experiences.

Dr. Max Baumgartner, P.T., Ph.D. serves as both the Director of the DPT Program, and the Dean of the School of Health Sciences at Trine University.  Originally from the University of Toledo (Ohio), Dr. Baumgartner joined Trine with more than twenty years of clinical experience and fifteen years of academic experience.  He is a capable and experienced physical therapist and has been instrumental in leading the Trine DPT program through the accreditation process with the Higher Learning Commission and the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).

Available as 3+3 degree path

The Experience

The doctoral program in partnership with Parkview Health and Lutheran Health Network is located in Fort Wayne between the Parkview Randallia and Veterans Administration Hospitals. Our 66,000-square-foot facility houses state-of-the art classrooms, clinical skills labs, a gross anatomy lab and a biomechanics and movement sciences lab.

There is a growing demand for physical therapists with doctorate degrees and our program will help to meet that need. As the knowledge base in the field has grown, physical therapists have had to increase their studies, making doctorate degrees the new standard.

The Results

The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a 39 percent growth in the number of physical therapists needed through 2020, and reports the median wage in 2010 was $76,310 (the most recent figure available).

Trine began accepting applications for the Doctor of Physical Therapy program in the fall of 2013. In the fall of 2014 we enrolled our first class of thirty two students.  We anticipate future growth in the program and outstanding opportunities for the continued success of our students.
