Bon Appetit, Trine hosting Locks of Love event
Collections taken in Whitney Commons
Trine University’s Office of Student Life and Bon Appetit Management Co. will co-sponsor a Locks of Love event Monday, Feb. 8 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in Whitney Commons Café in Trine’s University Center.
Locks of Love is a public, non-profit organization that provides vacuum-fitted hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. The organization fills this unique need for children by supplying high quality hair prosthetics made of donated human hair. Children suffering hair loss from incurable dermatological conditions, severe burns and injuries or radiation treatment have been helped by the prostheses, which fit without the need for tape or glue. The hairpieces help restore self esteem and confidence.
Children ages 6-18 receive prostheses every 18 months, but they require 6-10 ponytails of donated hair and approximately 4-6 months to manufacture. Donors annually contribute thousands of bundles of hair to this effort for children.
Those who wish to donate to this cause can contribute 10-inch lengths of clean, dry hair bundled into a ponytail or braid. Hair containing permanents or dye can be used, but bleached hair cannot. Finishing Touch Salon will cut the hair for collection, and Bon Appetit will collect monetary donations, hair bows, barrettes, ponytail holders and other decorative hair holders and notions.
Bon Appetit provides culinary services for Trine University, and has co-sponsored this event with the Office of Student Life for the past four years. For more information, contact Deby Pranger with Bon Appetit at 260.665.4278.
