Shawnee takes tops at High School Mathematics Competition

ANGOLA — Shawnee High School of Lima, Ohio, swept the 38th annual High School Mathematics Competition at Trine University this month. More than 160 students from 18 schools in Indiana, Ohio and Michigan competed in the event, which awards renewable scholarships to winning students and stipends to top teachers.
Shawnee High School math students, under the direction of teacher Jan Drerup, took first prize in the team category. Drerup won a $1,000 stipend, and the students Garrett Diltz, Cara Murphy, Cory Wilder and Josh Thomas each received $3,000 scholarships to Trine University. The school also took second-place with the team of students Brooke Heatwole, Eli Tucker, Zachary Diltz and Kirstan Scott, and Drerup was awarded an additional $500. Tucker also won second prize in the individual advanced category.
Quincy High School math students, under the direction of teacher Jeff Powell, took third prize in team competition. Powell won a $250 stipend for the success of students Megan Karney, T.J. Strock, Ryan Williams and Mary Snyder. Karney also earned third prize in the individual elementary category.
Bronson High School student Ha Nguyen won first prize in the individual advanced category and received a $5,000 scholarship to Trine University.
Marion High School student Kirby Kohlmorgen won third prize in the individual advanced category.
Warsaw High School student Bryce Carter earned first prize in the individual elementary category.
Saint Joseph High School student Jack Zhang earned second prize in the individual elementary category.
