Trine hosts annual high school engineering competition

 

ANGOLA, Ind. — Kalamazoo Area Math and Science and Canterbury High School students tied for first-place Division I honors and Penn High School captured Division II’s trophy at Trine University’s annual TSA (formerly JETS) TEAMS competition this week. Trine’s McKetta Department of Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering hosted the 10th annual event.

The TEAMS competition for high school students is an annual theme-based competition that gives students in grades nine through 12 the opportunity to discover engineering and ways in which they can impact their world through the discipline.

Four- to eight-student teams competing at Trine became part of the action as they worked together to use practical applications of math and science to answer engineering questions about everyday world challenges. Students completed hour-and-a-half test sessions, one an 80-question multiple-choice test and another consisting of four open-ended questions.

Nearly 80 students from Concordia Lutheran High School, West Noble High School, Kalamazoo Christian High School, Fremont High School and Penn High School competed in the event.

All of the competitors’ solutions will be judged at the state and national levels, and several national winners have emerged from the Trine competition.
