75 Thunder student-athletes named to MIAA honor roll
ANGOLA, Ind. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s Commissioner David Neilson has announced the Academic Honor Roll for the 2010-11 academic year. The list includes 75 Trine University student-athletes from all 16 MIAA teams. The women’s cross country, golf and soccer teams and men’s tennis were also announced as Team GPA award winners.
The MIAA Honor Roll recognizes student-athletes who achieved a minimum 3.5 grade-point average for the entire 2010-11 academic year while also winning a varsity letter in a sport. Initiated in 1990, the Academic Honor Roll recognizes students at MIAA member colleges who excel in athletics and academics. Of the 75 Trine student-athletes named, two have earned the distinction all four years while at Trine. They were: Jeremy Howard (Football/Elkhart, Ind.) and Katlyn Pero (Golf/Hubbard, Ohio).
The Team GPA award is presented to conference teams that achieve a 3.300 or better grade point average for an entire academic year. Lead by coach Bill Maddock, the men’s tennis team was fourth in the conference with a combine 3.617 GPA. Women’s golf team and Van Brandt earned the second highest GPA in women’s golf with a combine 3.427. Coach Terry Stefankiewicz’s women’s soccer team tallied a GPA of 3.403 while the women’s cross country team combined for a 3.346 GPA.
Of the 75 student-athletes honored, 35 have earned the distinction at least twice. The football and women’s soccer teams led the Thunder with 11 student-athletes represented each.
