Tyson Kaase wins IABSE award

Education major earns elite scholarship

 

ANGOLA, Ind. – Trine University education major Tyson J. Kaase was one of five students in the state who received the 2011 Indianapolis Alliance of Black Student Educators (IABSE)  Scholarship at the IABSE’s fall forum Friday, Sept. 30, at Marian University in Indianapolis.

The IABSE recognizes the critical shortage of African American students who enter and complete Teacher Education Programs across the state. In order to inspire and encourage students to remain in the education pipeline, the organization sponsors scholarships each year.

Kaase wrote an essay regarding his educational career goals upon graduation. He also submitted a resume detailing his experiences working with children during the past five years.

“An outstanding social studies teacher showed me how much fun it can be to be a teacher by creating a meaningful and interactive classroom environment,” Kaase wrote. “I have been pursuing a teaching career ever since.”

In addition to his studies, Kaase serves as a Trine University ambassador, mentoring prospective university students. He also serves as a university tour guide. His practicum experience has extended from eighth-grade social studies to multicultural/reading in content area at the high school level. One of his most memorable experiences was encouraging academics and interactions based on healthy living in Indianapolis Public Schools during NCAA Student Athlete Day.

Based on his experiences – in and out of the classroom – Kaase hopes to pursue teaching English in China upon graduation.

“As a young teacher, I think it would be an innovative way to spark my future Hoosier students’ interests in geography,” Kaase said. “I want to shatter the preconceived notions that students may have about the world and challenge them to explore new ideas and places.”

Kaase was recommended for the award by professors Kathleen H. Pomeroy and Sean Wagner because of his dedication, diligence and academic excellence.

“Tyson is self-directed, energetic and collaborative in all his endeavors,” Pomeroy said. “”In my estimation one of his greatest strengths is his compassion for all those he meets in his daily life. … Other students often choose to work with him because of his expertise and warmth. What more could one hope for in a future educator?”
