“Technology … is a queer thing. It brings you great gifts with one hand, and it stabs you in the back with the other.” — Carrie P. Snow, comedienne
ANGOLA, Ind. – Anyone who can appreciate that comic wit, or more broadly, anyone living today, will be sure to enjoy the comedy “Alarms and Excursions” by the Trine University Drama Club.
Michael Frayn’s “Alarms and Excursions” is a collection of eight short plays that examine the complexity and absurdity that technology has added to our lives. The plays are scheduled to be staged at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 25-27, in Wells Theatre.
In the first play, “Alarms,” two couples are having a dinner party, but can’t use the new bottle opener, which is further complicated by other electronic devices in the house. In “Leavings,” the same two couples return to the party and find themselves unable to depart. In “Doubles,” two couples are on vacation at a generic hotel and their experiences remind us of the commonality of human experience. While the remainder of the plays could be detailed here, the main idea is that we often don’t hear each other or have adequate means of response when we do hear. Also, it is never wise to fire the person who enters a speech into a teleprompter.
The cast of “Alarms and Excursions” consists of Brian Boes, a junior mechanical engineering major from Lafayette; Steven Crouch, a senior design engineering major from Hobart; Kate Cooke, a sophomore forensic science major from Knox; Kyle Cooke, a first-year student from Knox; Heather Darrah, a junior civil engineering major from Topsfield, Mass.; Katherine Hultquist, a first-year criminal justice major from West Lebanon; Nathan Lysaght, a junior electrical engineer from Hicksville, Ohio; Tyler Marx, a first-year social studies education major from Waterville, Ohio; Delaney Mosher, a senior forensic science major from Monticello; Rebecca Sutton, a junior informatics major from Britton, Mich.; Jessica VanTilburg; a senior from Angola majoring in accounting; and Nicholas Wainscott, a first-year psychology and criminal justice major from Silver Grove, Ky.
The play is being directed by Dan Ehinger, president of Drama Club and a senior psychology major from Richmond, Vt. Ehinger is assisted by Kerri Fish of Climax, Mich., a senior marketing major and vice president of Drama Club.
Trine University invites all who are able to attend to come and enjoy this delightful comedy. Tickets for the event are free and are available at the door during performance.
