Mayberry, Rolland are retired business executives

 

Two retired business executives have been elected to the Trine University board of trustees.

Phillip H. Mayberry is the retired president of Centennial Wireless and a provider of funding for start-up companies as an “angel” investor with Congeries LLC.

He has over 35 years with telecommunications companies, the last 10 as president of Centennial Wireless. While at Centennial, he grew the company from less than 100 to more than 1,500 employees, and annual revenue from $500,000 to more than $500 million.

He also provided strategic direction and tactics to compete with national telecommunications companies, focusing on employee training by creating Centennial University to provide general leadership and management, as well as industry-specific training. He devised and implemented accountability measures and compensation plans to motivate sales people, leading to consistently high financial results in the industry.

His extensive community involvement includes 15 years and two board terms with the Mad Anthonys, a Fort Wayne, Ind.-based fundraising organization for children’s charities. He is a member and past board member for the Youth Services Foundation, a fundraising organization supporting a children’s government program. He served on the oversight board for the operation of the University of Saint Francis Athletic Department in Fort Wayne, in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization in various cities, and directed a $5 million annual community involvement program for Centennial.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in political science at Indiana University in 1979. He resides in Clear Lake, Ind. and Orlando, Fla.

Ian M. Rolland, of Fort Wayne, is the retired chairman for Lincoln National Corp., with which he shares a 42-year history. He began his career at Lincoln National Life in 1956, becoming senior vice president of Lincoln National Life Insurance Co. in 1973, and president and a director of Lincoln National Corp. in 1975. He was named its chief executive officer in 1977, and chairman and CEO in 1992.

He retired from LNC in 1998, and now serves on the boards of directors of prominent corporations, including NiSource and Bright Horizons Family Solutions.

He has played leadership roles in numerous insurance industry organizations, and also boasts a distinguished service history. He is a past member of the board of trustees of the Hudson Institute; a member of the board of University of Saint Francis; a panel member of the Child Care Action Campaign National Advisory Panel; a member of the advisory board of CID Ventures and CID Partners; past chairman of the board of trustees of DePauw University; past chairman of the Board of Regents of the Indiana Academy; and serves as chair of the Indiana Natural Resources Foundation.

He earned a bachelor’s in mathematics and economics at DePauw University in 1955, a master’s in mathematics at University of Michigan in 1956 and holds honorary doctorates from Purdue, University of St. Francis, DePauw, Manchester College, Tri-State University and Indiana Institute of Technology.
