Alumni golf outing big success

Tops all-time fundraising high

 

Aug. 17, 2010--Trine University’s 20th annual Alumni & Friends Scholarship Golf Outing Aug. 6 at the university’s Zollner Golf Course raised nearly $68,000 for student scholarships, topping last year’s all-time high.

Alumni traveled from the East Coast and other parts of the country to support the university’s financial aid program, which will channel $17 million into academic and need-based grants and scholarships to students this academic year.

Alumni enjoyed a near-perfect day on the meticulous, rolling championship course, some returning to the revitalized campus for the first time in many years. Pete Durocher, who earned a mechanical engineering degree in 1961, traveled from Elmira, N.Y. for his first trip back in nearly 50 years.

The trip was worth it, according to Durocher. “The campus is very impressive. The new facilities are first-rate, and they blend in architecturally with the older buildings which have been upgraded and restored,” he said. He planned a return trip for the 50th reunion of his graduating class during the university’s Homecoming weekend Oct. 7-9.

Golfers competed for prizes throughout the day, wrapping up with a dinner in Witmer Clubhouse. Trustee and alumnus Steve LaHood and his wife, Wendy, sponsored the scholarship golf outing, while alumni Jerry Allen, board of trustees chairman, and his wife, Jorja, and Rieke Packaging were dinner sponsors. Fifth Third Bank and Chuck and Rita Nedele were lunch sponsors. AMI Investment Management, Jim Ingledue Construction Inc. and alumnus Scott Fergusson and his wife, Sheryl, were other sponsors.

“We appreciate the phenomenal support we received for this year’s scholarship event,” said Trine University President Earl D. Brooks II. “Many new players and teams joined our loyal annual supporters, and their generous contributions will put our excellent education within the grasp of more deserving students.”

The university will host its third annual Scholarship Golf Classic in Sarasota, Fla. at the Ritz Carlton Member’s Club on Jan. 27, 2011, and has scheduled its 21st annual Alumni & Friends Scholarship Golf Outing for Aug. 5 at Zollner Golf Course. For more information, e-mail to browns@trine.edu.
