Trine ensembles plan March 17
free concert at Tibbits Opera House
Celtic theme to dominate concert
in Coldwater for St. Patrick's Day
ANGOLA, Ind. – The Tibbits Opera House in nearby Coldwater, Mich., will be the venue for Trine University’s Celtic-themed concert on St. Patrick’s Day.
The free concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 17, will include Trine’s Four Thirty Jazz Band and the Trine University Wind Ensemble. The Trine’s Men’s Choir will perform a selection, too.
“This is the first time our ensembles have had the opportunity of performing in the Tibbits Opera House and we are very excited to offer a concert in such a fine, historic venue,” said Mark Kays, chair of the Department of Music and director of instrumental music.
“The concert falls on St. Patrick’s Day and will definitely have an Irish, or more specifically, a Celtic or Gaelic theme,” Kays said. “We will even be including the Great Highland Pipes on two of the selections.”
The Four Thirty Jazz Band, under the direction of Trine instructor Christopher Lizak, doctor of musical arts (D.M.A.), will perform a variety of music from swing to funk.
The Wind Ensemble, directed and conducted by Kays, will perform “Celtic Music of the Cinema.” Selections will include:
“Dartmoor, 1912” from “The War Horse,” by John Williams and arranged by Jay Bocook.
“Braveheart” by James Horner, arranged by Johnnie Vinson. Professor Stephen Mangold is guest conductor.
“How to Train Your Dragon” by John Powell, arranged by Sean O’Laughlin. Mangold is guest conductor.
“Far Over the Misty Mountains,” from the “The Hobbit,” by Howard Short, arranged by Kays. It will be performed by the Trine University Men’s Choir, directed by professor Monica Vernot, director of vocal music.
“The Lord of the Ring” by Shore with “The Fellowship of the Ring” arranged by Victor Lopez, “The Two Towers” arranged by Jerry Brubaker and the “Return of the King” arranged by Lopez. Professor Vernot is alto soloist.
The historic Tibbits Opera House was built in 1882 and is located at 14 S. Hanchett St., in downtown Coldwater.
