ANGOLA, Ind. – Students from the Four-County Area Vocational School in Kendallville and Heartland Career Center in Wabash competed in the Skills USA Criminal Justice Competition for District 2 on Saturday, Feb. 18, at Trine University.

In its first year of competition, the Heartland Career Center, under instructor and Skills USA adviser, Leroy Striker, set the standard in the contest, as five Heartland students advanced to state. Southwood High School senior Nick Striker, North Miami High School junior Brady Briggs and Huntington North High School seniors Julia Grover, Jeremy Rice and Austin Smith took top honors.

Other Heartland Career Center students participating included Wabash High School junior Emily French, Manchester High School junior Jason Banter, and Huntington North High School senior Steven Jeffers.

Four County Vocational Cooperative students Brandon Griffith and  Mack Grobis, both of Kendallville, also competed.

Each contestant was required to complete a written examination, complete a job interview, and perform a skills test requiring them to lift multiple latent fingerprints. Students also had to respond to a criminal complaint and take appropriate law enforcement action. Afterward they wrote a criminal report on the incident.  Students were evaluated/graded within each of the five skills.
