Kalamazoo Area Math and Science students captured top honors
at Trine University’s JETS/TEAMS competition in February and March.

Kalamazoo, East Noble win JETS competition

ANGOLA, Ind. — Kalamazoo Area Math and Science students claimed top Division I honors and East Noble High School took first prize in Division 2 in the JETS/TEAMS competition in February and March. Trine University’s McKetta Department of Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering hosted the annual event.

The Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS) TEAMS competition for high school students is an annual theme-based competition that gives students in grades nine through 12 the opportunity to discover engineering and ways in which they can impact their world through the discipline.

Four- to eight-student teams competing at Trine became part of the action as they worked together to use practical applications of math and science to answer engineering questions about everyday world challenges. Students completed hour-and-a-half test sessions, one an 80-question multiple-choice test and another consisting of four open-ended questions.

Competing schools included Canterbury High School, Concordia Lutheran High School, Kalamazoo Christian High School, Fremont High School and Penn High School.

All of the competitors’ solutions will be judged at the state and national levels, and several national winners have emerged from the Trine competition.
