Graduates honored for academic achievements

 

ANGOLA, Ind. — Trine University graduating seniors were honored Sunday afternoon during the school’s annual Honors Day ceremony in Hershey Hall.

Senior mechanical engineering and mathematics double major Christopher R. Armstrong of Seville, Ohio, received the prestigious Robert B. Stewart Award, which is awarded to the graduate who most clearly exemplifies the traditions and values of Trine University through achievement in scholarship, leadership and citizenship. Armstrong has accepted a job as a process engineer with Steel Dynamics Inc. in Jeffersonville, Ind., and he will begin pursuing a master’s in business administration at Indiana University Southeast.

Senior Victoria Bluhm received the Shari Coons Award, which is the highest honor given to a graduating female athlete. She is a two-sport team captain in volleyball and softball.

Senior Eric Watt received the Robert Greim Award, which is the highest honor given to a graduating male athlete. He was the quarterback of the Thunder football team and received the NCAA Division III’s prestigious Gagliardi Trophy in December.

Senior civil engineering major Adam DePoy received the Kunti and Satish Goyal Outstanding Civil Engineering Award from the Allen School of Engineering and Technology for his outstanding achievements. DePoy plans to pursue a master’s degree in civil engineering at Virginia Tech, where he was awarded the prestigious Charles E. Via Fellowship.

Elementary education major Jeremy M. Howard of Elkhart received the IACTE Outstanding Future Educator Award from the Franks School of Education. He earned president’s list honors for six semesters and has maintained the highest grade-point average in the education school. He is a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and received several athletic awards for his performance as a kicker on the football team.

Biology major Amanda Kilburn received the Outstanding Senior in Science award from the Jannen School of Arts and Sciences. She earned an overall grade-point average of 3.8, won a competitive Trustee Scholarship and was named to the National’s Dean’s List. After graduation, she intends to enroll at Wright State University, where she received a full-ride scholarship to pursue a master’s degree in biochemistry and cell biology.

Finance major Kyle Lynch received the Ketner School of Business Outstanding Senior Award. He carries a 3.87 grade-point average, and has had multiple internship experiences. He recently accepted a job in the finance and accounting  leadership program at Owens Corning.

Derick Craig Anderson received the School of Professional Studies Outstanding Student Award. He achieved a perfect 4.0 grade-point average while holding a full-time job, volunteering with the Elkhart Police Department and coaching Little League.

“During your time here, it has been our effort to give you the tools to be successful and well prepared, to help you become whole people, to be smart and to be sensitive, to be willing to gain knowledge and to share it, to learn and to love,” Trine University President Earl D. Brooks II, Ph.D., told students. “Likewise, you have worked hard to earn, achieve and perhaps even exceed your own expectations.  Continue to set the bar high in your career and your life and share that success with others – it will impact their lives too.”
