Engineering alumnus to speak at event

Paul Newman ('66) to serve as guest speaker at Ohio fundraiser

 

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – A Tri-State (now Trine) University alumnus will be the guest speaker at the Nelson T. Gant Foundation’s ninth birthday celebration June 4, according to a May 27 article in the Zanesville Times Reporter.

Paul D. Newman, of Flint, Mich., will speak at the event, “Celebrating 190 Years and Still Going Strong,” which aims to raise funds to renovate the home of Nelson Gant, who was a former slave and conductor on the Underground Railroad during the 19th century. His home stands at 1845 W. Main St. in Zanesville.

Newman is a 1966 civil engineering graduate. He retired from General Motors in 1995 after 30 years in various management positions. Additionally, he held various positions at what is now Kettering University and with the AC Spark Plug Co.

According to the newspaper, Newman developed one of GM's first affirmative action programs, was administrator of policy administration and employee relations, and was executive director of Urban Affairs, where he received several awards from national minority organizations for business development and affirmative action initiatives.

Newman also has received the Most Outstanding Young Man award in 1970 from Greater Flint Area Jaycees, Distinguished Service Award from Tri-State University in 1986, the Frederick Douglas Award from the National Negro Women Business and Professional Organization, and Greater Flint Pan Hellenic Council award for community service.
