Annual Alumni & Friends Golf Outing

Trine raises almost $60,000
for student scholarships

ANGOLA, Ind. – More than 230 golfers and dedicated businesses, alumni and friends raised approximately $60,000 for deserving students during Trine University’s 22nd annual Alumni and Friends Scholarship Golf Outing on Aug. 3 at Zollner Golf Course.

“We were amazed at the generosity of our alumni and friends, especially those golfers that graciously gave their own winnings from various raffles and contests that took place throughout the day back to the university,” said Trine president Earl D. Brooks II, Ph.D. “It was wonderful to see so many businesses and individuals from around the region and country come to campus for a day to support our deserving students.”

Among supporters were alumni Steve LaHood, a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity, and John Goudy, a member of Alpha Sigma fraternity. The pair led their brothers in the annual Sig Cup Challenge, in collaboration with the outing, in which the two fraternities competed to raise funds to support respective student scholarships.

The funds will support the university’s 2012-2013 scholarship program, which is channeling more than $20 million into the university’s academic and need-based aid for students. According to officials, each student will receive an average of $22,549 in scholarships and financial aid (from all sources).

“The university is diligently working to keep education affordable and attainable for students in a time when so many are concerned about the cost of college. At Trine, we believe in our students, and we invest in them. Everything we do is about them,” Brooks said. “We are able to graduate students who have some of the least amount of debt loads after they leave college thanks, in large part, to our alumni and friends.”

The golf outing event sponsor was Metal Technologies Inc. The company’s chief executive officer, Rick James, is a Tri-State University alumnus and incoming chairman of the school’s board of trustees. Dinner was sponsored by Rieke Corp. The company’s president, Lynn A. Brooks, is an active member on Trine’s board of trustees. Lunch was sponsored by Chuck and Rita Nedele and alumnus Steve LaHood and his wife, Wendy. Other major sponsors included AMI Investment Management, Jim Ingledue Construction Inc. and Mediacom.

The university will host its fifth annual Scholarship Golf Classic in Sarasota, Fla., at the Longboat Key Club and Resort on Jan. 24, 2013. For more information about participating, please contact Gretchen M. Miller, assistant to the president, at millerg@trine.edu.
