Trine to stage free
community holiday concert

 

 

ANGOLA, Ind. – Trine University’s music groups will take the stage for a free community holiday concert Sunday, and renowned trumpeter and Trine professor Bob Taylor will direct a portion of the program. The concert will begin at 4 p.m. and take place at in the Angola High School auditorium. 

Taylor, of Pioneer, Ohio, started his career at Fort Wayne Community Schools in 1968. After 30 years of teaching, he earned his doctorate in trumpet from the University of North Texas, studying under J. Keith Johnson, who wrote the brass-standard book, “The Art of Trumpet Playing.”

 

Taylor then went on to play principal trumpet in the Fort Wayne Philharmonic and form a brass quintet, Refiner’s Fire.

 

Taylor came to Trine this fall, at the invitation of Mark Kays, director of Trine’s bands and music department. Taylor plans to develop a brass ensemble that eventually becomes respected throughout the Midwest.

 

Sunday’s holiday concert will feature the university choir, chamber orchestra and brass ensemble as they perform numerous seasonal favorites, including “Let It Snow” and “Sleigh Ride.” In addition, the orchestra will play selections from “The Nutcracker.” Audience members will be invited to participate in a holiday sing-a-long at the close of the program.

In addition, Taylor and Kays are looking for brass players, of any age or ability, to play in a new brass group that practices Mondays at 7 p.m. in the T. Furth Center for Performing Arts, the former Angola Christian Church.  For more information, contact Kays at 665-8096.
