Trine students can compete in annual writing contest
ANGOLA — Trine University students are welcome to compete in the 2010 Walter Cunningham Writing Contest. First-place winners’ works will be published online at InscriptionsJournal.org, the online literary journal of Trine University.
Students may enter previously unpublished works in several categories. Those who enter in the fiction category should submit a short story of 5,000 words or fewer. Creative nonfiction works should be personal essays, narratives or memoirs of 5,000 words or fewer. Entrants also may submit up to three original poems. Those who compete in the academic writing category should submit a research-based piece of writing (a report, argument, proposal, analysis, etc.) of 5,000 words or fewer done for any class at Trine University.
Entrants are limited to one work of prose or one set of three poems per person per category. One person may submit to multiple categories. The contest is open to all full- or part-time students at Trine’s main or branch campuses. Authors will retain rights to works published in the online magazine.
In each category, first-place winners will receive $150 and will have their names inscribed on a plaque in Taylor Hall. Second-place winners will receive $50, and third-place winners will be awarded $25.
Entries should be submitted to Sarah Young, director of the writing center, at youngs@trine.edu.
Entries should include a title page with the following information: name, title of work, category for submission, contact information and a 25-75 word biography of the author. The entry deadline is Jan. 2, 2011, at 5 p.m.
