Five engineering students earn
scholarships at recent conferences

provide scholarships

ANGOLA, Ind. – Five Trine University students majoring in mechanical engineering were awarded scholarships during Foundry Educational Foundation’s recent College Industry Conference in Chicago. And, Trine has won more special delegate scholarships than any other university in the past seven years.  

“Trine’s nationally recognized engineering programs have long produced award-winning students and professionals,” said VK Sharma, Ph.D., dean of the Allen School of Engineering & Technology. “Our cast metals program is already ranked among the best in the country and will be even stronger with the bigger and better equipped cast metals lab that will be a part of the planned Jim and Joan Bock Center for Biomed and Innovation.” The Bock Center is scheduled to open in spring 2013.

Two Trine students won special delegate scholarships at the conference. These scholarships are given to the top FEF seniors and graduate students from the 33 North American FEF universities. Jeremiah Hardwick, a Morristown senior, won the Paul Carey Memorial Scholarship ($3,000) and Foster Webb, an Auburn senior, received the Richard Frazier Scholarship ($2,000). Both students completed co-operative (co-op) education with Metal Technologies in Auburn.  Hardwick is active with Christian Campus House, while Webb completed a summer internship at Multimatic in Butler, and has played soccer at Trine.

Metal Technologies co-op Eric Nixon won the Keith Millis Ductile Iron scholarship and the Northeast Indiana Chapter of American Foundry Association scholarship. The Mills scholarship, named for the inventor of ductile iron, is open to all graduate and undergraduate students at any institution of higher learning. Nixon, an Indianapolis junior who is active in Delta Chi fraternity, demonstrated his interest in ductile iron by performing research at Metal Technologies, Auburn Casting Center. The scholarships are for $2,000 and $300, respectively.

Joe Kaminski, a Valparaiso senior, and Mark Young, a Galveston junior, also received a Northeast Indiana Chapter of American Foundry Association scholarship ($300 each). Kaminski completed an internship with Ford Meter Box in Wabash and is active in Delta Chi fraternity. Young completed a co-op with Metal Technologies and is active with Christian Campus House.

The FEF awards were given Nov. 15 during FEF’s conference in Chicago. FEF strengthens the metal casting industry by supporting partnerships among students, educators and industry, in an effort to help today's students become tomorrow's leaders.

The AFS scholarships were awarded Nov. 12 in Plymouth.
