Students starting in Fall 2020

Given the current trajectory of coronavirus infection rates and updated guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and elsewhere, Trine University requires all faculty, staff and students to wear a face covering (mask) in all campus buildings when entering or traveling through, and in common spaces, hallways, public restrooms and anywhere else person-to-person contact may occur. Masks are not required in your assigned dorm room or when walking outside on campus, at least six feet apart from anyone. However, masks are required in residence hall shared spaces or when visiting another room.

For their safety and the safety of others, students and faculty in face-to-face classes will wear a mask and maintain six feet of distance from each other at all times. You will be expected to bring a mask to class every day. Failure to do so may result in an unexcused absence.

In addition to bringing at least three washable face coverings or a supply of disposable masks, it is strongly recommended that you bring a thermometer to monitor temperature when you return to campus. Face masks also will be available for purchase in the campus bookstore.

To limit any potential outbreak, you will be moved to quarantined housing if you:

  • Test positive for COVID-19;
  • Receive a COVID-19 diagnosis from a medical professional;
  • Are exposed to COVID-19 (defined as at least 15 minutes within 6 feet, unmasked); or,
  • Exhibit COVID-19 symptoms and are awaiting testing.

Students in quarantined housing will have meals delivered and can participate in classes online as they are able, but will be required to remain in quarantine. They also, as able or needed, will work with faculty virtually to develop an individual progression plan to stay on track in classes.

You may return to regular housing and classes if you test negative for COVID-19, are asymptomatic and have been cleared by the health center.

If you test positive for COVID-19, you may return to regular housing and classes if:

  • 10 days have passed since the test was collected
  • At least 10 days have passed since symptoms first appeared
  • At least three days have passed since fever has resolved (without medication) and respiratory symptoms have improved
  • You are asymptomatic and have been cleared by the Health Center

If you are exposed to COVID-19 but not tested, you will remain in quarantined housing for 14 days if symptomatic, or 10 days if not.

If you travel internationally or to a domestic area with travel restrictions (as defined by the Indiana State Department of Health), you will remain in quarantined housing for 14 days, and will be asked to self-monitor temperature for another 14 days.

Please note that, if your student is sent off campus for referred medical treatment or services, including COVID-19 testing, there may be additional costs associated that may be billed to your insurance.

Additional protocols for student-athletes have been developed with guidance from Parkview Sports Medicine, and will be communicated soon.

The Trine University Health Center has relocated to Quest Hall in order to minimize the opportunity for illness to spread in the University Center. Its space has been modified to provide both a regular clinic and COVID-19 clinic, staffed by Cameron Memorial Community Hospital personnel. You will need an appointment to visit the Health Center.

Students and employees will be tested for COVID-19 if they display symptoms of respiratory illness, in accordance with current public health guidance:

  • Testing will be overseen by our partner Cameron Memorial Community Hospital; if positive, infected students will be required to self-isolate
  • Students and staff will be reminded of the ongoing need for symptom-screening and self-monitoring
  • Public health experts currently see no role for broad temperature screening or antibody testing in a campus context and recommend against antigen testing for screening

All residential students will be required to complete a personal health questionnaire prior to moving into a Trine residence to help us monitor community health and wellness.

In response to COVID-19, Trine University and Bon Appetit have implemented serious sanitation and service measures to ensure that our students dine as safely and comfortably as possible.

In Whitney Commons Café, stations will be set up to aid in expediency and efficiency, reducing time in line and crowding. Social distancing will be encouraged in every food service venue on campus and masks will be required until arriving to your table. Tables and seating have been rearranged to allow for better social distancing and additional tables have been added outdoors as well as in the University Center mall area. Prior self-service stations will now be employee-served stations or contain pre-packaged items. In addition, we have increased to-go and pre-packaged items at all venues.

We also have a system in place to arrange for meals for any students that may be quarantined or isolated due to COVID-19 or any other illness.

All Bon Appetit employees will wear masks and gloves at all times, go through COVID-19 specific training, and have pre-shift wellness screenings.

There are intensified cleaning and sanitation efforts and schedules that have been implemented, as well as no-touch pay and self-swipe student ID card readers.

Though every precaution is being taken, the possibility remains that a pandemic outbreak in the state or community could force the university to cancel in-person academic instruction or close residential facilities. In that event, the university is prepared to immediately convert all instruction to online platforms, providing equitable support services, in order to allow students to stay on track to meet their educational and career goals. Since academic services will be provided throughout the semester, tuition and fees will not be refunded or credited.

If the university is forced to close residential facilities, a refund for housing will be issued to on-campus students. The credit will be based upon the week in the fall or spring semester that a closure occurs, as outlined below. Meal plan refunds will be on a pro-rata basis.

The university may apply the credit to a student’s account with the university to offset any outstanding balances.

In order to limit disruptions and to provide the highest level of safety, the fall 2020 semester will start on August 10, two weeks earlier than previously announced. Fall break and other holidays have been eliminated from this year’s calendar to accommodate this compressed schedule.

Starting earlier will enable you to complete the fall semester by Thanksgiving.  This will allow you to depart campus after finals and classes are completed by Nov. 25, and not return to campus until the spring semester starts in January 2021.

Classrooms and other on-campus spaces will be modified to ensure social distancing; physical barriers will be erected where necessary.

We continue to develop best sanitizing regimen for all our facilities. Informational signage has been installed in common areas, bathrooms, lobbies and wherever else needed.

Protective shields and barriers are now in place in specific areas and offices. We will continue to add hand sanitizing stations throughout campus and explore new technology options to eliminate touchpoints on campus, such as the touchless automatic door openers now available at the University Center.

Classroom procedures have been modified to limit sharing or passing objects among students. You should sanitize your desk area before sitting down, using materials provided in each classroom, and again when leaving, and sanitize your hands after each cleaning.

Due to reduced room capacities, classes may need to be split into smaller groups so that only some of the students are meeting in the classroom at any given time. Faculty have wide latitude to adjust this model to their teaching style and to meet course learning outcomes.

No food or drink will be allowed in classrooms.

In office situations where appropriate social distance cannot be maintained, faculty may hold office hours virtually via Zoom, Skype, telephone, or some other platform, or in a larger space that allows for appropriate social distancing.

If you feel ill, you must not physically attend class. If experiencing symptoms, you should call the Health Center at 665-4585 to make an appointment to be screened. For each scheduled class period of the semester, instructors have arranged a way for students to complete class activities virtually for those who are physically absent due to illness, suspected illness or quarantine. Students who are physically absent due to illness, suspected illness or quarantine must still participate in class virtually unless their illness makes them unable to do so.

You will need a doctors’ note or other documentation for two consecutive absences, or more than three physical absences over the course of the semester. As long as appropriate documentation is provided, there is no limit on the number of days you can be physically absent from class due to illness, suspected illness or quarantine.

Because it is likely that some students may be barred from physically attending class due to quarantine, illness or other reasons, all class materials and assignments will be available online.
