Professor Sean Carroll, Ph.D. is the chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His primary interests are in great teaching and real-time systems.
Carroll enjoys the puzzle-solving mindset of debugging and the cleverness needed to make a $10 computer perform important work such as saving lives or connecting friends. Even better, according to Carroll, is seeing students triumphant when they solve a problem themselves and discover they can do something they could not do before.
Carroll’s interests include hiking and walking; he has walked all the way across northern England, coast-to-coast, and hiked in the Olympic Mountains. He also tries to pay attention to world news and the advance of peace and prosperity; advances in the arts, especially architecture and sculpture; and advances in the sciences at a layman’s level. He considers himself an amateur naturalist, dabbling in weather, botany, astronomy and zoology, and he enjoys reading mysteries, science fiction and fantasy, as well as lurking on Reddit.
