HAC Book Night hits new highs

They claim the best things in life are free, and HAC likes to believe that’s true. That’s why each spring the department literally gives books away.

In the weeks leading up to Book Night, HAC collected 3,180 books ranging from fiction to history to sci-fi to cross-stitch guides, and everything in between. During the event itself, which ran from 5 pm – 9 pm, 1,095 books were taken by 208 separate guests. In that time, more than 300 people came to browse.

Beginning at 6 pm, HAC professor Lou Ann Homan’s speech class performed poetry readings in the Writing Center. The event was set up and staffed by communication and English students getting hands-on experience with event planning and promotion.

The day after Book Night, the remaining books were left in the LINK for students to browse. Several hundred additional volumes were taken. After that, the remainder were either saved for next year’s event or sent to Better World Books.

A free drawing was held to win the student voted-upon book/DVD combo for this year. DVD copies of the films Zootopia, The Secret of NIMH and The Secret of NIMH 2, as well as the book Mrs. Frisby and The Rats of NIMH were awarded to Savanna Roberts, a sophomore criminal justice major.
