107 Trine student-athletes named to MIAA Honor Roll

July 10, 2013

ANGOLA, Ind. - Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Commissioner David Neilson has announced the Academic Honor Roll for the 2012-13 academic year. The list includes 107 Trine University student-athletes from all 18 MIAA teams. In addition, eight teams, including the women's cross country, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, track and volleyball teams along with the men's tennis squad, were announced as Team GPA award winners.

The MIAA Honor Roll recognizes student-athletes who achieved a minimum 3.5 grade point average for the entire 2012-13 academic year while also winning a varsity letter in a sport. Initiated in 1990, the Academic Honor Roll recognizes students at MIAA member colleges who excel in athletics and academics. Of the 107 Trine student-athletes named, five have earned the distinction all four years while at Trine. They are Sannie Anderson (cross country and track/Hesperia, Mich./Hesperia High School), Lauren Burns (golf/Wooster, Ohio/Cloverleaf), Annalisa Krug (cross country and track/Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield), Sarah Radekin (volleyball/Chillicothe, Ohio/Alexander) and Samantha Willmann (tennis/Anderson, Ind./Frankton).

The Team GPA award is presented to conference teams that achieve a combined 3.300 or better grade point average for the academic year. The eight teams for the Thunder to earn the award are the most in school history after six teams earned the honor a season ago. The Thunder also placed three squads in the top-10, second most by any school. Lead by first-year coach Ryan Gould, the men's tennis team was tops among all men's sports and eighth overall with a combined 3.543 GPA. Gould's women's tennis team also placed near the top of the conference with a 3.662 GPA, third highest among all teams. Also under a first-year head coach in Tom Knudson, the women's track team earned the highest GPA among the three schools to be honored with a 3.530, which was 10th overall.

For the first time since 2006, the volleyball team earned the award posting a 3.524 under head coach Jamie Wozniak. The softball team, coached by Donnie Danklefsen, was honored in consecutive years for its 3.401 GPA which was the highest among the three Trine softball teams to receive the award. Coach Terry Stefankiewicz's women's soccer team tallied a GPA of 3.338 to earn the honor for the third straight season. The women's cross country team combined for a 3.352 GPA under coach Charlie Massi, giving it the award for the fifth straight year and the seventh time in nine years. In the first season as a conference sport, the women's lacrosse team, led by first-year coach Jeannine Ravellette, was one of just two to earn the school's honor with a 3.328 GPA.

Of the 107 student-athletes honored, 40 have earned the distinction at least twice. The honorees include 34 freshmen, 30 sophomores, 18 juniors and 25 seniors. The football team led the Thunder with 13 student-athletes represented while the women's track, softball and volleyball teams each had nine honorees.
