INDIANAPOLIS — The Board of Directors of the Asphalt Pavement Association of Indiana,
Inc. (APAI) has announced that Gary Greene, Ph.D., associate professor of civil engineering
at Trine University, is the recipient of the association’s inaugural “Outstanding
Asphalt Industry Educator Award.”
Greene will be presented with this recognition at the organization’s annual meeting
in Indianapolis on Dec. 20 at the Indianapolis Marriot East Conference Center.
This award is not meant to be presented annually, but is reserved and meant to be
presented in special cases where a university educator goes the extra mile in exposing
his or her students to the outstanding career opportunities available to them within
the Indiana asphalt industry.
The organization said Greene has demonstrated extra effort through guest classroom
asphalt materials lectures by APAI member firm volunteers, class tours of an asphalt
plant in Angola operated by an APAI member firm, continuous promotion of the expanding
APAI civil engineering scholarship program at Trine, and accompanying students who
receive APAI scholarships to the association’s state convention and trade show in
Indianapolis. The convention and trade show includes the organization’s Scholarship
Banquet, professional educational sessions offered throughout the day, and networking
opportunities with more than 600 members, INDOT staff and local public agency personnel
in attendance.
“APAI’s Board of Directors, along with our Scholarship Committee and Workforce Development
Committee, all salute the entire Trine civil engineering faculty, administration and
executive leadership for an outstanding partnership dating back to 2012,” said William
Knopf, executive director of APAI. “Dr. Greene’s efforts on behalf of his students
deserve to be recognized.”
The Asphalt Pavement Association of Indiana, Inc. was formed in 1959 and is comprised
today of more than 100 member firms, including 20 major asphalt producers based in
Indiana. Cumulatively, association members produced 11.5 million tons of asphalt in
2018, serving the Indiana Department of Transportation, along with the state’s counties,
cities, commercial and aviation markets. The association’s website is at asphaltindiana.org.
