Math students earn scholarships, prizes at Trine competition

More than 150 students representing 16 area high schools took part in Trine University’s 47th annual Mathematics Competition on Feb. 28.

The competition, which included schools from Indiana, Michigan and Ohio, consisted of individual and team events for students, with first through third places recognized in both categories. Cash awards were given to the teachers of the top three teams to be used toward math education at their school.

A team from Penn High School in Mishawaka, Indiana, consisting of Joshua Oh, Roman Ramos, Sultaan Khan and McKenna Cain, won first place, earning renewable $3,000 scholarships toward tuition at Trine University for each member and a $500 cash award for teacher Paul McClelland.

Joseph Keyser, Preston Gascho, Hailey Shultz and Caden Risse of Northridge High School in Middlebury, Indiana, earned second-place honors, providing a $250 cash award for teacher Simone Powell.

A second team from Northridge, made up of Roselynn Gutierrez, Jacob Sheridan, Brett Mast and Braedan Crawford, took third place. Powell also received the $125 cash prize for that placement.

Preston Gascho of Northridge High School won the top individual award, earning a renewable $5,000 scholarship toward tuition at Trine University. Second place went to Jacob Sheridan of Northridge and third went to Run Li of St. Joseph High School in South Bend, Indiana.

McKenna Cain of Penn won the top individual elementary award. Second place went to Katelyn Baker of Clinton High School in Michigan. Sultaan Khan of Penn won third place.
