Ethan Sommerfeld heard about Trine University from a friend and decided to check it
out for himself.
“The programs stood out to me, and when I decided to go back and finish my degree,
Trine felt like the right fit,” he commented.
Once he completed his bachelor’s degree in information systems, he said the progression
felt natural to continue to a master’s. His organization’s growing focus on artificial
intelligence (AI) and his own interest in the subject directed him to Trine’s MSAI
program, where he was named Outstanding Student for the Class of 2026.
Hands-on experience
Ethan particularly enjoyed the hands-on laboratory work in the AI courses.
“I'm a very hands-on learner, so any time I could jump in and actually experience
what I was studying, it not only helped me retain the material better — it made the
process genuinely enjoyable,” he said.
He appreciated being able to apply the material he used in classes directly into his
work.
“I've already been working on several projects where I've been able to put what I
learned into practice, and it's been both rewarding and a great way to push what I
know further than the classroom alone would have,” he said.
As one of the few people in his organization with an advanced degree in AI, Ethan
said he plans to take a leading role in AI initiatives.
“I've already recommended (Trine’s MSAI) program to my entire work team,” he said.
“The program is well-structured and accessible, the coursework is engaging and the
material has real practical value. I'm already applying what I learned to personal
projects, using some of it in my current role, and planning to leverage much more
of it as I continue my pivot from healthcare into tech.”
