Trine adds family nurse practitioner track to MSN program

June 08, 2026

Trine University has added a family nurse practitioner (FNP) track to its Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) to help address the growing demand for advanced practice providers and expand access to high-quality healthcare in communities nationwide.

“As the population continues to age and healthcare provider shortages increase - especially in rural and underserved areas - the need for advanced practice nurses prepared to deliver comprehensive, evidence-based care across the lifespan continues to grow,” said Angel Jennings, Ph.D., executive director of nursing at Trine.

“This new track prepares registered nurses for an advanced practice career, while having the flexibility to continue working. It also will help provide professionals who can meet healthcare needs in this region and beyond.”

As few as 6 semesters

Trine’s online, flexible format allows nurses who already have a BSN the opportunity to complete the FNP program in as few as six semesters while continuing to work.

The curriculum includes 576 supervised clinical hours across diverse patient populations, ensuring graduates are equipped with the hands-on experience, clinical confidence and decision-making skills needed to provide high-quality, patient-centered care across the lifespan.

Students receive dedicated practicum support in securing and navigating clinical placements. Clinical learning experiences are structured to ensure students are prepared to enter advanced practice roles.

Graduates will be competent in areas including scientific foundations, leadership, quality, practice inquiry, technology and information literacy, policy, health delivery systems, ethics, independent practice, advanced clinical reasoning, health promotion and disease prevention strategies, interprofessional collaboration and population-focused care.

The Bureau of Labor Services estimates that demand for nurse practitioners will increase more than 40% over the next decade.

The FNP track joins existing tracks in nursing education and nursing informatics. For more information, visit trine.edu/msn.
