Trine University has named Andy Rang, who had served as interim athletic director
since March, as its new athletic director.
Rang also will continue as head women’s basketball coach.
He follows Matt Land, who was named vice president for advancement for the university
earlier this year.
“Andy has demonstrated a high level of success, steady leadership and passion for
positively impacting student athletes at Trine University. We are confident that as
athletic director, he will apply these characteristics across all Thunder athletics,
which continues to play such an important part of student life and development at
our institution,” said Tony Kline, Ph.D., Trine University president. “We are excited
for Andy. We know he will work hard to support our outstanding coaches to collectively
raise the bar of premier athletic teams, facilities and culture in this next chapter
at Trine.”
“It’s an honor and a privilege to build on the incredible foundation Matt Land has
established here at Trine University,” Rang said. “My hope and plan is that Thunder
athletics will have even more success on the field and court and in the classroom,
providing a great experience for Thunder fans and setting up our student-athletes
to succeed, lead and serve as they launch their lives and professional careers after
graduation.”
Rang has a 184-41 record as head coach of Trine University women’s basketball, a position
he has held since the 2018-19 season. He also had served as assistant athletic director
of travel since 2014.
He has been a member of the Thunder coaching staff for 14 seasons.
His game-planning and scouting abilities have played a pivotal role in the turnaround
of the Trine program. In the last eight seasons, the Thunder have vaulted up the conference
ranks to the top of the MIAA, finishing no worse than second.
The Thunder have reached the NCAA Tournament all seven seasons under his leadership
and have won at least one game in each appearance. Rang's most successful NCAA appearance
came in the 2021-22 season, when the Thunder reached the Final Four.
Trine University is a member of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association
and offers 36 intercollegiate sports, 27 of which compete in NCAA Division III.
