Summary

The laboratory manager must have excellent organizational skills and a strong commitment to laboratory safety. Primary responsibilities cover a wide range of managerial duties including but not limited to the ordering and preparing of material for general biology and chemistry labs, supervising undergraduate work study students, and implementing the departments’ laboratory safety plans.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ordering laboratory supplies for both departments and getting purchasing approvals from department chairs.
  • Helping to prepare general chemistry and biology labs including but not limited to setting up glassware, preparing solutions, preparing unknown samples, and cleaning/organizing.
  • Maintaining/organizing the chemical supply room.
  • Working with faculty to maintain deionized water systems and laboratories.
  • Coordinating gas cylinder and liquid nitrogen purchases and pickups.
  • Hiring, training, and supervising student workers.
  • Monitoring lab safety for both departments, preparing for lab safety inspections, and filling out incident reports as needed.
  • Being available for bio-hazardous and chemical waste pickups and collecting and cataloging hazardous waste.
  • Serving as a member of the Laboratory Safety Committee (LSC).

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • Hiring, training, and supervising student workers.
  • Monitoring the lab safety Moodle page and ensuring students complete the lab safety quiz before working in a lab.

Required Education

Minimum Required Education/Licenses

  • Bachelor's Degree from accredited College or University

Preferred Education:

  • Master's Degree or equivalent

 Field of study for required or preferred education:

  • Biology, Chemistry, or Biochemistry

Salary

Salary is competitive will be based on qualifications.
