New scholarship offers up to $8,000 to Trine engineering, computing students

September 12, 2024

Jerry and Jorja AllenTrine University is offering $2,000 yearly toward tuition for new students enrolling in the Allen School of Engineering and Computing for Fall 2025.

The university is offering the Jerry L. Allen and Jorja Allen Engineering Scholarship thanks to funding provided by Dr. Jerry Allen, a Trine trustee and accomplished engineer, and his wife Jorja, a Trine alumna.

“We know there are many opportunities for students who complete engineering and computing degrees, as evidenced by the more than 99% employment rate enjoyed by graduates from the Allen School of Engineering and Computing,” said Kim Bennett, vice president for enrollment management at Trine.

“We want to do everything we can to reduce or remove barriers to these opportunities, and we are grateful to the Allens for generously supporting this investment into the future of our students.”

To qualify for the award, students must apply and be admitted to the Allen School of Engineering and Computing, and submit a FAFSA by March 1. The award is not based on need.

The scholarship can be used as one of two stackable awards toward tuition at Trine University.

Engineering and computing programs

Dr. and Mrs. Allen are longtime Trine supporters, and the namesakes for the Allen School of Engineering and Computing.

The school offers majors in biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer engineering, computer and information technology, cybersecurity, design engineering technology, electrical engineering, extended reality, mechanical engineering, and mechatronics and robotics engineering.

A new computer science degree program will launch in Fall 2025.

Dr. Allen, a 1978 mechanical engineering graduate of Tri-State University (now Trine University), built Vikimatic Sales into a $110 million distributor of fiber optic products. Today, Vikimatic Sales is a private line of branded products within the TVC Communications family, the nation’s premier telecommunications distributor. He holds 11 patents.

In 1995, Dr.  Allen was named Best Boss of the Year from a national pool of 700 nominees. He was honored as “Entrepreneur of the Year” by Ernst & Young of Ohio in 1997 and a year later the Northeast Ohio Growth Association named Allen “Deal-Maker of the Year.”

Jorja Allen is a 1978 business administration graduate who was named the Woman of Distinction for Trine University in 2012.
