Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is an RA and RD?

A Resident Assistant or RA is a student staff member in Residential Life whose purpose is to build a community between residents in a floor/building community, assist roommates in defining rules/expectations for their room, and put on events in the halls to encourage residents to meet their neighbors.

A Resident Director or RD is an upper class student with previous experience as an RA who supervises RA staff, supports residents, and assists in emergency situations.

  • What if my roommate and I don’t get along?

Living with a roommate is a new experience for most college students, even if they shared a room at home, it was typically with a family member who they’ve grown up with. It is okay if you and your roommate aren’t best friends who share all the same interests, majors and beliefs. In some cases it is better to just be roommates who share a mutual respect for one another.

If issues arise between you and your roommate, we encourage you to seek a solution to the issue early. If you don’t feel comfortable discussing the issue one on one with your roommate, your RA can assist your room in finding a resolution that works for everyone in the room. If the RA needs assistance with mediating a roommate disagreement they will utilize the support of their RD or the professional staff in the Department of Housing and Residential Life.
